SBP left sweating in must-win Patron’s Trophy fixture

KARACHI: State Bank of Pakistan (SBP)’s hopes of making the semi-finals of the Patron’s Trophy Grade-II cricket tournament suffered a major setback on Thursday when K-Electric posted a 300-plus total in the fifth and final round of matches.

After deciding to bat at the SBP Sports Complex, K-Electric declared their first innings at 302-8 in 79 overs on a sweltering afternoon with young wicket-keeper Umair Masood contributing 89 off 114 balls (14 fours) and Faraz Ali 82 off 132 (10 fours and two sixes) while Hassaan Khan hit a 73-ball 55 with the aid of four fours.

Fast bowler Umaid Asif claimed four wickets for 51 runs.

SBP, in reply, lost one wicket in making 17 runs in six overs before stumps.

Pool ‘A’ leaders Navy were 90-3 in 25 overs after dismissing bottom-placed Omar Associates for 170 at the NBP Sports Complex. Off-spinner Raza-ul-Hasan excelled with figures of 6-64.

Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) made 226 in their first innings with Yasir Mushtaq scoring 73 before Haideri Traders collected 72-3 at the UBL Sports Complex.

Pakistan Air Force (PAF) piled up 272 all out after Karachi Port Trust (KPT) chose to bowl first in the Pool ‘B’ fixture at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot.

KPT need at least six points to prevent Port Qasim — who have already finished their league-round engagements — from reaching the last-four stage from this group.

With Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) already confirmed as Pool ‘C’ qualifiers, the teams below them in the standings are just playing for pride.

Opener Shahzar Mohammad notched up his second consecutive century as the grandson of the legendary Hanif Mohammad and son of Shoaib hit an unbeaten 150 with his 173=ball innings decorated with 14 fours and one six as PIA declared at 332-2 before Pak Saudi nosedived to 90-8 at the Diamond Clun Ground in Islamabad.

Muzaffar Iqbal starred with eight wickets for 29 runs while helping Army shot out OGDCL for 107 at the Army Cricket Ground in Rawalpindi.

Army also found runs hard to come as they stuttered to 155-7 at draw of stumps.

Three departments in Pool ‘D’ are very much in the running for the knockout phase of the competition.

Railways, who top the pool with 19 points, are well placed in Lahore as third-placed Ghani Glass closed day of this final round match at 62-4 after the hosts themselves had totalled 221 with Mohammad Waqas contributing a 177-ball 90 (13 boundaries).

At the LCCA Ground, Brighto Paints, who are levelled on points with Ghani Glass with 18 apiece, posted a healthy 331 all out before reducing Sabir’s Poultry to 18-2 in reply.
