HYDERABAD, May 19: The District Bar Association has condemned police action against Human Rights Commission of Pakistan chairperson Asma Jehangir and general secretary Iqbal Hyder and other activists in Lahore. In a joint statement issued here on Wednesday, the newly-elected president of the association, Chaudhry Bashir Ahmad, and office-bearers Sardar Ahmad Qureshi and Ahmad Ali Khan Naghar said the government had failed to control the law and order situation.

They regretted that similar treatment had been meted out to journalists who had brought out a peaceful procession to mark the international press freedom day. They said the country had been converted into a police state.

They demanded that general elections should be held in the country and power should be handed over to true representatives of people.—Bureau
