Rape-cum-murder of two girls: GCUF students stage demo against police

FAISALABAD: Students of the Government College University Faisalabad on Wednesday staged a protest demonstration against the police failure to arrest the killer(s) of their fellow student and a minor girl.

Carrying the banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the police, the students blocked the Imambargah Chowk for traffic and demanded the arrest of the culprits and an exemplary punishment for them. Because of the protest, the motorists faced inconvenience.

A female student of MA English literature at the GCUF was abducted on March 25 when she left the university after attending her classes. Her parents filed an application with the Gulberg police for registration of a case but to no avail. Her body was found in a canal three days later. Autopsy report said she was subjected to rape before being murdered.

City Police Officer Athar Ismail had suspended the Gulberg police SHO Basharat Ali over negligence.

The victim’s father said he had also appeared before the CPO with a request to ensure registration of the case, but to no avail.

Talking to reporters, the protesting students blamed police for inaction. They regretted that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had visited Samundri but did not bother to offer condolence to the family of the victim belonging to Jaranwala.

Meanwhile, Punjab Inspector General of Police Arif Nawaz visited the residence of seven-year-old girl in Jaranwala who was abducted, raped strangled last Sunday, and assured the family that justice would be ensured. A police officer said police teams had been working on both the cases to trace the culprits.

He said some suspects had been taken into custody, but so far no clue could be found.
