PESHAWAR, May 18: The US should play its role in beautification of the Peshawar as the provincial metropolis has been hosting millions of Afghan refugees for couple of decades. This was stated by a delegation of Save Peshawar Movement (SPM) led by its president Syed Ayaz Badshsh, during a meeting with Michel Spangler, principal officer, US Consulate here Wednesday.

The SPM delegation also demanded opening of the General Bakht Khan Road in Peshawar Cantonment for vehicular traffic.

Briefing the US Consulate officials, Ayaz Bashsh said the consulate should be shifted to another place as people were facing immense problems owing to the closure of the road.

He said the consulate should be shifted to a place where security arrangements did not create problems, adding that the people were forced to take longer route through the Hayat Avenue due to closure of the road.

The US official appreciated efforts of the SPM for uplift of the city, agreeing in principle that the consulate be shifted to another suitable place.

He said the US government was fully aware of the difficulties of the people due to the closure of the road, adding that shifting of the consulate would take place as soon as a suitable alternative place was selected.

Allison Dyess, Vice Consul, said on the occasion that the US government would provide some funds for cultural preservation in the city.
