MANSEHRA, May 6: Police have arrested the husband and mother-in-law of a woman who was earlier accused of attempting to commit suicide by setting herself on fire.

A case has been registered under Section 324/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Shabir Ahmed of Jabba Bulhaar village reported in an FIR lodged with Phulra police station on April 29 that his wife Nazia Bibi had attempted to commit suicide by setting herself on fire after a domestic quarrel.

A case was registered against Nazia Bibi under Section 325 of the PPC and she was admitted to the Ayub Hospital Complex, Abbottabad, in critical condition.

The investigation officer, ASI Ali Akbar Khan, found contradiction in the statements of Nazia’s husband and mother-in-law Akbar Jan.

Sources said they had first stated that she had set herself on fire in their home but later said that she had attempted to commit suicide in a deserted house owned by them, where fuel-wood and fodder were stored, which were reduced to ashes.

The sources said that the victim had said in her statement recorded in presence of doctors that her husband and mother-in-law had been treating her badly since her marriage nine months ago and they did not allow her to meet her parents.

She said the accused dragged her out of their home, forcefully took her to the nearby deserted house and set her on fire on the night of April 28. She ran out of the house to seek help but her husband told people that she had tried to commit suicide.
