LARKANA: Call to save lakes and rivers from pollution

LARKANA, May 4: Speakers at a seminar have demanded to stop the flow of poisonous water from the Heerdin Drain, Balochistan, Right Bank Outfall Drain and other drains into the Hamal Lake. The Earth Lovers’ Society in collaboration with the Indus Development Society organized the seminar on “Save lakes, canals and rivers from pollution” here on Wednesday.

Dr Zulfikar Rahoojo, Nisar Khokhar, Munir Soomro, Hamida Kalhoro and others regretted that highly contaminated water was flowing into the Hamal Lake.

They feared that overflow of the Manchhar Lake could pose a threat to the Dadu district.

They apprehended that release of water of Manchhar into the River Indus could lead to spread of water-borne diseases in Hyderabad, consequently causing deaths.

They observed that Kacho had not received rains for five years due to which the water table had lowered and recycling of water had been affected.

They said NGOs’ help should be sought in rescuing natural lakes facing environmental degradation.

The seminar passed several resolutions, demanding fishing rights to fishermen and payment of compensation to families affected by the RBOD project.
