KARACHI, Oct 20: Nazims of 13 union councils of Orangi Town have deplored neglect of development work in their area and demanded of the Sindh government to take immediate steps to rectify the situation, which had aggravated since freezing of their accounts.

Convener of the Nazims, Shafi Ahmad, told a news conference said that plight of Orangi Town began when the development work in the area was stopped due to freezing of accounts owing to some inquiry.

He claimed that owing such a situation, the residents of the town were facing acute water shortage and battered roads, while faulty sewerage system and trash was polluting the environment. He said that owing to such pathetic situation more and more people were exposed to diseases.

He said that as a result of prevailing situation, town health workers had not been paid salaries. He said that as union Nazims and councillors were directly elected by the people, they were under tremendous pressure and being criticized by them for neglect of development work on Shahrah-i-Orangi, Shahrah-i-Qaddafi, Shahrah-i-Roomi and Moulana Shaukat Ali Road.

They appealed to the provincial governor, chief minister, advisor for local bodies and the city Nazim to play their role for reviving development work in the locality, inhabited by 1.4 million people, which had suffered owing to freezing of accounts.

Resolving to play their role in the revival of development projects, the Nazims said that they would approach all the concerned people in this regard.

They maintained that the UC Nazims had tried to resolve problems of the people with the financial assistance from the city government and the city Nazim, but the condition would have been much better if the Town’s funds were spent on mega projects in Orangi Town.
