LUCKNOW, Aug 25: The chief minister of India’s most populous state sought fresh elections on Monday after a rocky alliance with a Hindu nationalist party collapsed.

Mayawati told reporters she had handed a letter to the governor of Uttar Pradesh urging him to dissolve the fragmented state legislature and call elections after the Bharatiya Janata Party withdrew support.—Reuters
