PTI hails Sharif’s indictment as ‘monumental’ day in judicial history

ISLAMABAD: Hailing indictment of the Sharif family members on corruption and money laundering charges, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday expressed its satisfaction over the progress of the cases in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) court.

After the indictment of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and his son-in-law retired Captain Mohammad Safdar by the accountability court in connection with a reference pertaining to the Avenfield flats, acting information secretary of the PTI Fawad Chaudhry addressed the media.

“Today is a monumental day in Pakistan’s judicial history. The PTI is contended over the progress of cases in the accountability court. The credit for the historic trial which brought the members of the most powerful family in the dock of law goes to the PTI leadership under Imran Khan,” he said.

Mr Sharif, who is currently in London, has also been indicted in Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment references. His sons, Hassan and Hussain, were named co-accused in the charge sheet in the references.

Mr Chaudhry said that it was a “historic day” for the nation which saw indictment of the most powerful [political] family which had been ruling the country for the past three decades.

The PTI leader criticised performances of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Security Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and NAB, warning that the party could launch another movement for seeking accountability of hundreds of other people whose names were there in the Panama Papers.
