BANGALORE (India), Aug 21: Former Indian cricket great Kapil Dev on Thursday joined the row over Sachin Tendulkar’s duty-free Ferrari by castigating the government for adopting “double standards.”

“When I look at it in a much broader way I would like to say I am very happy about Sachin getting the car,” Kapil told reporters here.

“But if the duty-free waiver applies for Sachin, it must apply for every sportsperson.

“Why can’t we have the same system for everyone who has sweated for the country? Why the double standards?,” the legendary all-rounder asked.

The US$163,000 Ferrari 360 Modena, gifted by one of Tendulkar’s sponsors, arrived in Bombay two weeks ago after the federal government waived import duty worth 245,000 dollars on a request from the millionaire cricketer.—AFP
