12 killed in Kashmir violence

SRINAGAR, Aug 18: Seven Mujahideen were among 12 people killed in occupied Kashmir overnight and on Monday, a police spokesman said.

Indian troops shot dead five freedom fighters in the forests of Gajnitop in southern Udhampur district overnight, police said.

Police identified one of the slain Mujahideen as Masul-ul-Islam — the commander of hardline Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami.

An Indian soldier and a civilian were killed during an overnight gunbattle between freedom fighters and the security forces in occupied Kashmir, police said.

“Two civilians were injured when they were caught in the cross-fire,” the spokesman said, adding they were taken to hospital, where one died.

In Rajouri and Poonch districts, two Kashmiris died in overnight gunbattles with security forces and village defence committee members, while on Monday morning suspected Mujahideen shot dead a 44-year-old Kashmiri.

Police said it recovered two bullet-ridden bodies of a Hindu and a Muslim in the districts of Doda and Anantnag overnight.—AFP
