LAHORE, Aug 16: Pakistan on Saturday announced A four-member team for the Davis Cup Asia Oceania play-off clash against South Korea.
The tie will be held at the Defence Club from Sept 19 to 21.
According to the Pakistan coach Rashid Malik, Aisam-ul-Haq, Aqeel Khan, Nomi Qamar and Jalil Khan were selected after the conclusion of trials.
Rashid clarified that both Aisam and Aqeel were exempted from the trials and confirmed that Aqeel was not playing in Malaysia and only Aasim Shafiq was there.
Earlier ftikhar Rao the coordinator of the Davis Cup had said on Friday that Aqeel and Aasim both were playing in Malaysia and the former was not exempted from the trials.
Rashid said that Aqeel was to join the training camp at the Defence Club from Sunday.
He said that Jalil showed good performance during the trials. Jalil, the younger brother of Aqeel, had beaten Shahzad Khan of Faisalabad 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 and also outplayed Shafiq Ahmad 6-2, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 which virtually ensured him a place in the squad.
Commenting on the Pakistan’s chances in the tie, Rashid said that all depends on the results achieved by Aisam in the two singles.
However he diclosed that the top player of South Korea Hung Tak Lee was ranked 50 in the world whereas Aisam enjoys ranking around 300 in singles.
The winners of the tie will remain in Group-I while the losers will relegate to Group-II.
