ISLAMABAD, Jan 4: Water level at Tarbela and Mangla on Friday was recorded lower than during the corresponding period last year.
Official data stated that water supply from the both dams remained inadequate to meet the need of Punjab and Sindh as the demand was high owing to long dry season in the country.
The management of Tarbela reduced water outflow to 5,000 cusecs on daily basis to meet requirement of wheat and sugarcane crops in Punjab and Sindh against 12,500 cusecs inflow.
Water level at Tarbela was recorded 1397.6 feet and outflow remained 5,000 cusecs against the inflow of only 12,500 cusecs.
A drastic decrease of water inflow had been recorded in the River Indus after the beginning of heavy snow fall in various upper parts of the Northern Areas.Therefore, the Indus River System Authority decided to decrease the outflow from Tarbela Lake.
Water level in the lake was about 153 feet lower than 1,550 feet— its capacity —- and its dead level was 1,369 feet.
When asked about the water position at Mangla, an official of the monitoring cell said that water position was decreasing on hours basis owing to the impact of snow fall and higher outflow of 16,000 cusecs against only 6,200 cusecs inflow.
The water level at Mangla was recorded 1114.90 feet and inflow was registered only 6,200 cusecs and outflow remained higher than inflow 16,000 on Friday.
When asked, the official said the contribution from Kabul and Chenab rivers was registered 5,080 cusecs and 3,545 cusecs respectively.—APP
