Rains lash southern Sindh

KARACHI: The entire Tharparkar district and large areas of Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Badin and Mirpurkhas districts received several spells of heavy to moderate rainfall while several other districts received drizzle over the past 24 hours, it was reported at 10pm on Friday. It was still raining in different parts of Sindh when the last reports came in.

Moderate rain lashed Hyderabad city and its adjoining areas for around 40 minutes on Friday night. Skies remained heavily overcast and strong winds swept through the district at a speed of 35 nautical miles before and during the rainfall.

Widespread rain was reported from Mithi, Islamkot, Chhachhro, Diplo, Dahli, Kaloi, Khensar and hilly areas of Nagarparkar in Tharparkar district on Thursday night and Friday.

Badin (city), Tando Bago, Matli, Tal­har, Golarchi, Malkani Sharif, Kadhan, Nindo Shahar, Khoski, Shadi Large, Pangrio and their adjacent areas received moderate rain on Friday.

Intermittent spells of light rain lashed many towns of Mirpurkhas district including the district headquarters.

Reports from rural areas suggested that the rain and flooding caused negligible damage to standing crops and disrupted process of farming but the fresh spells were widely welcomed by growers.

No casualty or remarkable damage to property in rain-related incidents was reported.

There were widespread complaints of power outages of long duration in all rain-hit areas.

A Hyderabad Electric Supply Com­pany spokesman said that most feeders in the rain-hit areas were shut as a precautionary measure to avoid major breakdowns.

Weather pundits have already forecast rains in most parts of Sindh from Thursday to Wednesday.
