KOHAT, Aug 7: District council convener Haji Sardar Khan has summoned a special session of the union council Nazims for voting on a no-confidence motion against District Nazim Malik Asad, a notification issued on Thursday said.

Opposition leader Syed Mahtabul Hassan, who is also Nazim of the Ustarzai Union Council, moved the no-trust motion and it was seconded by Lachi Union Council Nazim Fawad Khan.

The opposition had tabled the no-confidence motion under section 24, sub-section (1) of the Local Government Ordinance of the North-West Frontier Province, 2001, on Wednesday.

The convener admitted the motion and asked the members to assemble on Monday for voting on the no-confidence motion.

The motion is the outcome of a dispute over the allocation of funds when the district Nazim announced Rs20 million for the development of a remote area of Khushhalgarh.

But the opposition accused the Nazim of allocating such a huge amount because his personnel secretary was from the same area.

The opposition members had asked Mr Asad to make fresh allocations for various union councils and refused to okay the budget. They had also asked the Nazim to tender an apology for using derogatory language against some of the Nazims during the budget session.

Mr Hassan, while talking to Dawn, said: “We have no personal grudge against the Nazim and he is an honest person, but must perform his duty according to law and allocate funds to union councils in a judicious manner after consultations with the UC Nazims.

“Some members dislike him because he is a bit arrogant and remains away from Kohat for four days a week to look after his construction business in Islamabad which is not fair.”
