ISLAMABAD, Jan 3: The government is taking every possible step to provide postal facilities of international standard to the people, said the communications secretary Iftikhar Rashid.

Presiding over a meeting regarding restructuring of Pakistan Post here on Thursday, he said it was important to establish the postal system on modern lines.

Since its reforms, he said, Pakistan Post earned a profit of Rs40 crore last year and revolutionary steps had been taken for improvement of the system.

Mr Rashid said it would be ensured that maximum facilities were provided to the postal employees so that they could work with devotion.

Speaking on the occasion the Pakistan Post director-general, Maj-Gen (Rtd), Agha Masoodul Hassan, said, besides introducing new services to accelerate postal delivery, modern techniques including automation and computerization was being introduced so that people may avail better postal facilities throughout the country. He said more than 48,000 employees were working in the postal sector and “we desire computerization of postal system. He said the post office had also started work for collection of utility bills.

Mr Masood said the limit of money order facility had been extended from Rs10,000 to Rs50,000.

Likewise he said, the money weight of parcel had also been increased upto 50kg.

He said arrangements would be made for training officers in commercial and computerized accounting. Restructuring of Pakistan Post will further enhance its performance.
