SADIQABAD, July 30: A number of watchmen posted by the Punjab government at Thul Hamza and its adjoining areas have complained about their menial job and little remuneration.

Talking to this correspondent on Wednesday, the watchmen said they had to keep vigil at night and maintain the records of births and deaths at the union council offices in the morning.

Besides, they said, they were forced to do slavish assignments by the patwaris, tehsildars and policemen.

However, they hardly got Rs300 a month for all this labour, they added.

They appealed to the authorities concerned that they should offer them better remuneration for their job, otherwise, they would commit suicide in front of the governor’s house.

COTTON CROP: Standing cotton crop is facing a serious threat because of intermittent rains here for the past two weeks.

According to growers, the cotton crop will be ruined if the rain continues for a few more days. No spray can save the crop in the rainy days, they say, believing that there is every chance of pest attack.

They have demanded the agriculture department authorities to conduct survey of the cotton crop to save it from devastation.

MEETING: The tehsil coordinators for secondary schools in the district have allowed cash awards and commendation certificates for the headmasters and teachers showing remarkable results.

The decision was taken at a meeting presided over by District Education Officer (secondary) Faqir Muhammad Anjum here on Tuesday.

The cash prizes will be distributed in the first week of September. Among the award winners will be the students securing top eight positions from the Bahawalpur education board.
