AJK woman killed, man injured in Indian firing

MUZAFFARABAD: A woman was killed and a man suffered injuries in “unprovoked” Indian shelling and firing from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.

The casualties occurred in Khuiratta and Goi sectors of Kotli district, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Chaudhry Zulqarnain.

He told Dawn by telephone that Manzoor Begum, 60, wife of Mohammad Hussain, was standing near her house in Thandi Kassi village of Khuiratta sector when she was hit by splinters of a mortar shell.

Earlier, 65-year old Mandi Khan was hit by Indian forces when he was standing in the courtyard of his house in Kathar village of Goi sector.

The SSP said that apart from mortar shelling, Indian snipers were also directly targeting residents of the most vulnerable areas along the LoC with small arms.

“This man (Mandi Khan) received a bullet in his leg,” he said.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement that Indian troops had resorted to a ceasefire violation along the LoC without any provocation, targeting civilians.

Pakistani troops effectively responded, it added.
