17 retired professors to continue work at PU

LAHORE: The Punjab University said on Tuesday 17 retired meritorious professors, retired vice chancellors and retired professors would continue serving as professor emeritus for life time in the varsity. However, it has yet to notify the restoration the services of other 20 or so sacked contract professors.

According to PU Registrar Prof Dr Naeem Khan, the 17 professors are: Dr Rafiq Ahmed (economics), Sheikh Imtiaz Ali from (law), Dr Khairaat M Ibn-e-Rasa (chemistry), Dr Zuhoor Ahmad Azhar (Arabic), Dr Munawar S Mirza (education), Dr Najma Najam (applied psychology), Dr AR Shakoori (zoology), Dr Khawaja M Zakria (Urdu), Dr Hassan Askari Rizvi (political science), Dr Syed Akram Shah (Persian), Dr Javed Iqbal (botany), Dr Razi Abbas Shamsi (botany), Dr Muhammad Nawaz Chaudhry (geology), Dr Muhammad Waheed Akhtar (biochemistry), Dr Arif Butt (chemical engineering), Dr Shahbaz Malik (Punjabi) and Dr Jamila Shaukat (Islamic studies).

Prof Khan said these professors would continue mentoring the academic life of the university in consonance with the status and caliber of the title. He said the impression was wrong that the varsity had totally relieved retired professors from university rather the senior professors appointed as professor emeritus would continue to provide guidance or continue research with faculty and students.

Meanwhile, PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir presided over a meeting of the selection board unanimously approved a list of world-known panel of experts for appointments and promotions on teaching posts in all the faculties.

GEOLOGY: Protest at the Geology department continued on Tuesday over restoration of its director Shahid Ghazi. Punjab Higher Education Minister Syed Raza Gilani has asked the varsity to resolve the matter at earliest.
