Shabbir retains Pakistan Open crown

KARACHI, Dec 28: Reigning champion Mohammad Shabbir Iqbal of the Pakistan Navy, carded a one under par 72 to pick up the spoils once again in the Caltex 36th Open Golf Championship after the fourth and final day on Sunday at the Karachi Golf Club.

Lying at No.20, Shabbir staged a remarkable recovery and with an eight under par 65, came back into the limelight finishing the third day as joint leader with 25-year-old Amjad Yousuf.

After the final round, Shabbir had an aggregate of 284, enjoying a two-stroke lead over Amjad and Mohammad Munir, who finished joint second with an aggregate of 286.

Munir produced the best performance in the final round. Munir carded a four under par 69. The same can be said about Ghani Khan, who also carded a four under par 69 with four birdies on the back nine.

Taimur Hussain overnight seventh after running into a bad patch on the first two days carded a two under par 71 and was fourth.

In joint fifth position were Mohammad Sajid and Mohammad Siddiqui who had an aggregate of 291 with Matloob Ahmed. Javed Inayat, Mohammad Tahir Nasim and Mohammad Tariq shared seventh position.

Ghani was 11th with 293, Taj Nabi and Mohammad Javed joint 12th with 295, Karam Hussain and Nadeem Inayat joint 14th with 296.

Ali Haji continuing to lead the pack, clinched the amateurs crown with an aggregate of 292, after ending the final day with a one over 74. Tariq Mahmood, although carding a three under par 70, finished second four strokes behind the winner, with an aggregate of 296. Two strokes further behind was Shahid Javed Khan, grabbing the third spot with a two under par 71.

Sindh lifted the Inter-association championship for the very first time beating the defending champions Punjab by 10 strokes.

Punjab were comfortably placed in the lead for the first two days, until Sindh took a one stroke lead after the third day’s play which increased to 10 on the final day, winning 907 against Punjab’s 917. The NWFP were third with 944 points while Balochistan brought up the rear with 981 points.

Shabbir Iqbal received the trophy along with a cash prize of Rs.173500. Runners-up Munir and Amjad each received Rs.89000. Taimur finishing fourth went home richer by Rs.53,200, while Mohammad Sajid and Mohammad Siddique, received Rs.42,450 apiece.

Javed Inayat, Matloob Ahmed, Mohammad Tahir Nasim and Mohammad Tariq each received Rs.28,850.
