These two were the finalists last year also where Aqeel had to raise a sweat in beating Nomi in three sets.
With a service point in the first set, Aqeel committing a series of unforced errors with Nomi attacking from the baseline, the scores were level at 1-1.
However with some powerful cross court backhand smashes helped on with a few aces on his service, Aqeel was soon ahead 4-1. Taking the next point Aqeel was leading 5-1, before Nomi managed to pull one back 2-5.
That was as far as he could go in the first set. With a delicate drop shot and two forehand smashes, Aqeel picked up the first set 6-2.
With Aqeel continuing to dominate the proceedings and Nomi struggling to get his act together, the champion raced through the next set 6-2, to wind up the final with effortless ease.
Maryium Rashid ended the pretensions of 12-year-old Aamena 6-1, 6-1 to win the ladies singles title for the fourth consecutive time.
Maryium becomes the top tennis player in the country when she beat Ghazala Yasmin, a title she held till 1998. She then shared the No.1 seeding with younger sister Haleema in 1997.
Losing the title to Nida Wasim in 1998 she regained the top ranking again, beating her sister Haleema in 2000, a spot she holds till now.
Aamena on the other hand tried her level best to stem the tide but seemed to be overawed with the large gathering that thronged the venue.
Although beaten but certainly not disgraced, Aamena has the potential of becoming the next Pakistan champion. Only 12 years old, this young lady still has plenty to learn as years go by.
In the boy’s singles, top seed Wasif Cheema from Islamabad beat the local lad unseeded Adnan Khan 7-6, 6-1.
In a very close first set Wasif won on a tie break after being in front 5-4, 6-5.
In the second set Adnan took the first point but that was to be his last hurrah. On the attack from the word go, Wasim breezed through the next six points to emerge winner, grabbing the set 6-1.
The boys under-14 was won by top seed Fahad Khan from Islamabad, who got the better of unseeded Daniyal Alvi, who put up a commendable performance before going down 4-2, 4-1.
The men’s singles winner Aqeel received a purse of Rs.50,000 and the winners trophy, while Nomi received Rs.20,000 and the runners-up trophy.
Maryium was handed a cheque for Rs.20,000 and the winners cup, while Aamena received Rs.8000 and the runners-up cup.
The men’s doubles winners Aqeel and Rashid Malik each received Rs.5000 each, while the runners-up Jalil Khan and Mohammad Shafiq had to be content with Rs.2500 apiece.
Wasif, the boys singles champion received Rs.20,000 and a trophy, while runner-up Adnan received Rs.10,000 and a trophy.
The winner of the boys under-14 contest Fahad Khan went home richer by Rs.5000, while Daniyal received the runners-up prize of Rs.2500 and a trophy.
