RAWALPINDI: Man gets death sentence

RAWALPINDI, Dec 20: A court on Saturday handed down capital punishment to a man who had killed a woman over a land dispute in the jurisdiction of Chauntra police.

The court also imposed Rs100,000 fine on the convict, Mumraiz Bhatti. The fine amount would go as compensation to the bereaved family, the court observed in its decision.

The prosecution had contended before the court that Mumraiz had killed Ilahi Jan, over a land dispute. The court, however, acquitted seven co-accused in the case after the prosecution failed to produced evidence against them. Those acquitted are Arshad Mehmood, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Afsar, Chand Mehboob, Allah Ditta, Ansar Mehmood and Yasin.

Meanwhile, the judge of the anti-terrorism court no 1, Manzoor Ahmed Mirza, recorded statements of prosecution witnesses in Taxila missionary hospital and Shah Najaf Imambargah terrorism cases.
