PESHAWAR: The Awami National Party’s senior leader and former senator Haji Mohammad Adeel died here on Friday morning. He was 72.
Mr Adeel, who attended a function of the Afghan consulate on Thursday, was rushed to the hospital late at night for breathing problems.
A family member told Dawn that Mr Adeel had suffered renal failure about a year ago and had since been undergoing dialysis on a weekly basis.
“He was fine till 11pm, but all of a sudden he started experiencing breathing problems and was immediately rushed to the hospital and was put on the ventilator,” the relative said, adding that later the doctors pronounced him dead.
His funeral prayers were offered in the afternoon at the Jinnah Park, Peshawar.
Senior party leaders, colleagues, politicians and party workers attended the prayers.
Mr Adeel was born in a prominent Hindko-speaking family of Peshawar on Oct 25, 1944. His father Hakim Abdul Jalil was the president of the Indian National Congress, Peshawar chapter, and was a close confidant of Bacha Khan. His father participated in the non-violence movement and the British government jailed him at the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean for three years in 1919.
Mr Adeel studied at the Edwardes College, Peshawar, and rose to prominence after joining politics from the ANP’s platform.
He was elected to the NWFP assembly thrice — in 1990, 1993 and 1997.
He served as a provincial finance minister in Pir Sabir Shah’s government in 1993 and later served as a deputy speaker of the provincial assembly from 1997 to 1999.
He was elected a senator in 2009 and retired in 2015.
