KARACHI, Dec 12: Acting city Nazim Tariq Hassan on Friday said Karachi, a calm and peaceful city where social events and gatherings were held regularly, was being projected in the international media as a “troubled” city.
“Unfortunately, we ourselves defame our own city by unnecessarily projecting its shortcomings, instead we should highlight the positive aspects of our native land,” he said while speaking at an Eid-Millan party held by Faran Club International.
Founder of the club, Abdul Rahman Chapra, and the club’s president, Shaikh Ghulam Muhammad, also spoke on the occasion. Noted Urdu poets N.M Alam, Prof Inayat Ali Khan, Ziaul Haq Qasmi and Ejaz Rehmani presented their verses.
The acting Nazim said several other large cities of the world were also facing similar problems; they had traffic problems and had no expertise or equipment to effectively deal with their issues, “but their citizens do not cry like our citizens”.
He said those who expressed lack of confidence in the performance of government officials were actually criticizing their own city and country, though people in other cities of the world were living in conditions much worse than those in Karachi. “Millions of people spend their lives on footpaths in Mumbai, Kolkata and other major cities of India, while in Europe and the United States people are killed because they don’t carry a few dollars in their pockets”.— PPI
