LHC accepts ex-CJ Iftikhar Chaudhry's petition for disqualification of PM

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday accepted a petition filed by former chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry calling for disqualification of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The petition filed by Chaudhry's Justice Democratic Party states that the prime minister and his family had lied and hidden their assets but the truth had been revealed in the Panama Leaks earlier this year. The petition called for disqualification of the premier and his family for life.

The petition also said that a reference had been submitted to National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq but no action was taken and the reference was dismissed.

A single-member bench comprising Lahore High Court Chief Justice Mansoor Ali Shah accepted the petition for hearing and set Oct 6 as the date for the next hearing.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Anwar Zaheer Jamali last week set aside objections raised by the Supreme Court (SC) office on four petitions seeking a probe into the Panamagate revelations and the disqualification of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
