PESHAWAR, Dec 1: The city district council will meet here on Tuesday with a heavy agenda which will include illegal appointments in the capital city police and students’ abuse scandal in a local school.
The 28-member opposition group, led by former city mayor Arbab Mohammad Tariq, had filed requisition last month to summon the session of the district council.
For the first time an opposition group has requisitioned the council session since the introduction of the local
government system in August 2001.
The requisition had been filed under section 5 (2) of the Model Bylaws, 2001.
Initially, council convener Dr Iqbal Khalil blocked the opposition move to requisition the session, saying that there was no legal provision in the Local Government Ordinance in that regard.
Later, he accepted the opposition plea after seeking interpretation from the local government and rural development department.
According to the agenda, the district council will hold discussion on illegal appointments in capital city police, sexual abuse scandal in City Government Higher Secondary School No. 3, appointments in City District Girls College and overall performance of the district government.
Opposition leader Arbab Tariq accused convener Dr Iqbal Khalil of deliberately delaying the session of the district council.
He told Dawn that the city district government had miserably failed to resolve
people’s problems and there was no check and balance system.
He said the four town councils had become independent entities as these had been violating the district government directives.
The opposition members of the council also complained that development funds were being distributed on political grounds.
