LAHORE, Nov 30: District Nazim Mian Amer has said the city district sanitation system will be fully mechanized after the arrival of Rs170 million machinery and equipment from abroad in the near future.

Talking to union council Nazims and councillors here on Sunday, the Nazim said 52 motorvehicles imported for the conservancy fleet of the Solid Waste Management had arrived at the Karachi Port and would reach Lahore shortly. Mechanical sweepers booked for Rs60 million were also expected to reach from abroad soon.

He said the CDG had already delivered tractor-driven trolleys to 42 union councils for solid waste collection from rural areas. The CDG was also acquiring a new landfill site on Ferozepur Road for Rs40 million, and had awarded the contract for the construction of a boundary wall around its Mahmood Booti landfill site.

The Nazim said the CDG was continuing its efforts for scientific disposal of 4,000 tons of solid waste being generated in the city daily. Letters of intent had been issued for the establishment of compost plants in the private sector on a build-operate-transfer basis, and terms and conditions were being finalized for signing of agreements.

He said the CDG was spending Rs700 million on solid waste management every year, but had been receiving only Rs10 million in the form of sanitation fee. The fee had now been included in the water supply bills for improved recovery.
