PESHAWAR, Nov 23: The women police station here in the provincial metropolis has so far proved of no significant assistance to the victimized women in the NWFP.

The women police station with a strength of 70 staff members and established in 1994, has shown no remarkable performance. Since its establishment neither any FIR has been registered in this police station nor any investigation in any case undertaken by the women officer, DSP.

Few days ago for the first time a girl from Hayatabad registered a complaint about domestic violence with the office of the DSP. The woman DSP was reluctant to listen to the complainant and wanted to refer the case to the police station in Hayatabad, but the DIG directed her to solve the case on her own.

When the concerned officer, DSP Musharraf Azam, was contacted for details about the case, she refused to comment.

The women staff consisting of DSP, inspector, SHO and ASIs has so far been involved in raids, computer cell and escorting women criminals to court for hearing.

The chances are that the women police station, which has so far shown no significant performance regarding crimes committed against women, would soon turn into a deserted police station or a women complaint cell in the name only.

There are qualified women subordinate staff members ambitious to perform their duties, but are not being encouraged by their seniors, a police woman told Dawn.

The graduate ASIs are not sent for training to the Police Academy due to which they could not get promotion.

Women police officials blame their seniors for not sending them for training courses.

Some eight computer literate women were appointed against the post of constables, but almost half of them have resigned or availed long leave due to the inappropriate behaviour of their seniors, one official alleged.

These women computer operators were appointed by the Capital City Police for their computer section established for keeping record of the department.

Samina, a woman working in the computer section, left her job because she was pestered by the woman officer concerned. Two computer operators have got themselves transferred to the Central Police Office( CPO) whereas another computer operator, Kanwal, has gone on long leave.

The women police staff members including ASIs and SHOs are supposed to go for training courses, but are not sent for any training course. That is the reason that the policewomen do not get promotion.

There are some ASIs who have been in service for more than six years, but they are still not sure of their promotion, whereas their other colleagues in the department have been promoted.

The DSP in-charge of the police station did not respond to repeated calls made by this reporter.
