LAHORE, Nov 20: Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi has asked district governments to follow the ongoing campaigns against illegal arms and the vehicles with tinted glass.
Speaking at an Iftar reception here on Thursday, the chief minister asked district and tehsil Nazims to implement security arrangements for Eidul Fitr and Jumatul Wida.
He said the drive against illegal arms was continuing, and it was binding on all district and tehsil councils to strive hard for the recovery of such weapons and elimination of illegal activities. The campaign against vehicles with tinted glass was also continuing, and all should have to follow the laws, however influential they were, he said.
The chief minister urged the Nazims to play their role in the maintenance of law and order, religious harmony and the provision of justice.
He said the district governments should adopt a comprehensive strategy for the implementation of social reforms and laws pertaining to the law and order framed by the provincial assembly.
He said there should be no reluctance in the implementation of the law against wasteful expenditure on marriages because it provided a relief to the poor and middle class people.
He said the federal, provincial and district governments were part of the same system, and a better coordination among them was in the interest of the masses.
IRRIGATION: Presiding over a meeting on irrigation, the chief minister said the World Bank had offered to finance Rs60 billion for the uplift of the irrigation sector.
The government was implementing mega projects for the construction of water channels with the assistance of international agencies for preventing wastage of water, he said.
The chief minister said the irrigation system served as the foundation of agriculture and economic progress and prosperity in the country. Expansion of the irrigation system was inevitable for the growing requirements of electricity and water. He said this system was being restructured so as to improve the water distribution system. The process for the provision of electricity to villages and far-flung areas was also being expedited.
The meeting was attended by World Bank representative Abid Hasan, Irrigation Minister Amer Sultan Cheema, CM’s adviser Jehangir Tareen, P&D chairman Humayun Farshori and secretaries of the irrigation and finance departments.
HEALTH: Presiding over a meeting on health, the chief minister directed the officials concerned to upgrade the Postgraduate Medical Institute and the Services Institute of Medical Sciences besides providing all facilities there.
He said the government was attaching importance to the health sector, and evolving a comprehensive programme for an improvement in medical education. He said only qualified and trained doctors could guarantee better medical care to the patients. Trained staff, building, medical instruments and allied facilities would be provided to the Services Institute of Medical Sciences so that the students could get education in a better environment, he said.
