BADIN, Nov 18: District Nazim Kamal Khan Chang has opposed the construction of the Kalabagh dam and the greater Thal canal, pointing out that the projects have been rejected by the very people for whom the schemes are being undertaken.
Talking to journalists at the Tando Bago Press Club at an Iftar party on Monday, he said that as an elected member of the district council, he would never accept any plan or proposal that was against the interests of the people.
He said that the district government could not run smoothly without coordination of the provincial government and deplored postings and appointments without the consent of the district government.
He maintained that political influence was deteriorating the working of each and every department in the province and added that the education department had been worst affected.
He said the provincial political shadow had rendered the district government ineffective, eroding the system to such an extent that powers vested to the district Nazim were practically suspended.
The district Nazim also criticized the arrest of flood victims who were demanding their right from the relief committee and the administration, adding that three affected talukas — Badin, Shaheed Fazil Rahu and Tando Bago — were not provided with due relief and rehabilitation.
PROTEST: Workers of the Bawani Sugar Mill took out a protest procession on Monday against the management of the mill for non- payment of their dues.
Raising slogans against the management, they warned that if their dues, outstanding for the last four years, were not paid immediately, the workers would not allow the mill to run.
They claimed that due to non-payment of dues, a senior worker, Ateeq, had died as he was unable to pay for his treatment. Holding the management responsible for Ateeq’s death, the protesters demanded registration of a case against them.
Later, a delegation of the workers met the district Nazim and apprised him of the situation.
