KARACHI, Nov 17: The University of Karachi on Monday issued merit list of 2,503 candidates for admissions to MA classes against 2,411 seats for the academic session 2004.

The provisional lists for admissions to MA, MSc, MLIS, MCom classes were displayed at the notice board outside the varsity’s Silver Jubilee gate around 4pm today, while details would also be available at varsity website (www.ku.edu.pk.) on Tuesday, a KU admission committee official said.

The candidates having objections regarding the provisional list can file a claim on the forms available at the United Bank counter, located at the SJ gate on payment of Rs200 from Nov 20 to Nov 24. The list of valid claims would be displayed on Nov 27 at 3pm.

Admission committee Director Dr Mudassir Uddin said that a total of 4,062 applications were received and in view of possible drop outs, and to accommodate eligible candidates, if any, the merit lists of different departments had been increased by 20 per cent more than the available seats.

The number of candidates has increase by 23 per cent as compared to the figures of last year. However, admissions to four departments— Applied Chemistry, Bengali, Pakistan Studies (under BA/BSc Hons category) and Statistics (under PGD category)—were not made due to non-availability of eligible candidates.

The students included in the merit list should get their admissions finalized by submitting prescribed fees and documents from Nov 20 to Nov 24, Dr Muddassir said.

After the abolishment of entry-test system, the merit marks once again increased at the International Relations department. Admissions to the department were closed at a percentage of 57.15. All admissions in the list were provisional and subject to verification of eligibility and documents, a university hand out said.

The varsity offers admissions on merit under three categories, which are; Category “K”, comprising applicants who passed examinations from educational institutions in Karachi; category “S” included the applicants having passed the examinations from institutions outside Karachi but in Sindh province, and category “P” consisted of applicants having passed the pre-requisite examinations from institutions outside the province.

The varsity had allocated three per cent seats in each department on merit for candidates passing the pre-requisite examinations more than five years ago, subject to eligibility.
