LAHORE, Nov 13: A brilliant century by Shahid Yousaf and an equally good performance by Faisal Naved brought the pool “C” leaders Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) in sight of victory against Higher Education Commission (HEC) in the Patron’s Trophy Inter-departmental qualifying round on Thursday.
Shahid’s 108 and Faisal’s 83 helped the bankers to gain a massive lead of 211 on first innings by declaring it at 321 for eight wickets in reply to HEC’s first innings total of 110.
By close of play HEC had lost six second innings wickets for 111 — 100 runs behind to put ZTBL to bat again.
Shahid hit 11 fours in 157-ball knock. Faisal smashed nine boundaries in 121-ball innings.
For HEC left-arm paceman Salman Rahat and Sajid Aziz picked up three wickets each for 56 and 80 runs.
In the second innings, opener Muhammad Shoaib (31) and Usman Fayyaz (33) were the key scorers for HEC.
The second team of this pool will be decided from Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) matches which were heading towards draw at different grounds.
KPT had taken a slender lead of 33 runs on first innings against Pakistan Air Force (PAF) by scoring a 320 in 82.4 overs in reply to PAF’s 287.
Opener Muhammad Farrukh (90, 11 fours, 166 balls), Maisam Hasnain (62, eight fours, 108 balls) and Haris Ayaz (56, 50 balls 6 fours, one six) batted well for KPT.
The chances of NBP for the main round dimmed when they conceded 30-runs lead on first innings against Railways.
Railways had scored 327 in their first innings. NBP were all out for 297 in 73 overs after resuming their first innings at nought for nought.
Three half-centuries by Naumanullah (55), Qaisar Abbas (64), Zahid Saeed (55 not out) failed to give the bankers a vital lead.
In pool “D” Sui Gas had enhanced their chances to qualify for the main round as leaders when they gained 87-run lead against joint leaders Allied Bank Limited (ABL).
Sui Gas earned the lead by scoring 177 after resuming the first innings at 121 for seven wickets, while replying to ABL’s 90.
Taimoor Khan finished with five for 51 while Tahir Mughal grabbed three for 60 for the bankers.
By close of play, ABL were 202 for two in the second innings — 115 runs ahead with eight wickets in hand.
Opener Khalid Latif (95, 14 fours, two sixes, 158 balls) and Farhan Adil (42 batting, six fours, 58 balls) were the major ABL scorers.
A superb unbeaten century by Salman Qadir (102) and half- centuries by Abdul Rehman (71, 84 balls) and Asadullah Butt (56) enabled Habib Bank Limited (HBL) to grab 212-run lead on first innings against Leo International.
Salman faced 147 balls as HBL declared their first innings at 339 for seven in 83 overs while replying to the rival’s first innings total of 127.

SAGA earned full points against Pakistan Education Board (PEB) by registering an innings and 221 runs victory.
PEB were bowled out for 100 in their first innings with Azharullah and Tauqir Hussain taking four wickets each for 29 and 25 runs.
