GAHALANAI: Political agent of Mohmand Agency Mahmood Aslam Wazir has said that organising sports events are aimed at providing opportunity to the tribal youth to utilize their potential in constructive and positive activities. He urged the youth to come forward and take part in such activities, saying that the administration would provide them all the required resources and security.
He was speaking at the concluding ceremony of the cycle, donkey cart and marathon races in the Ghalanai Sports Stadium here on Sunday. The races started at 10:30am from Ghaiba checkpost and concluded at 11:00am at the sports stadium. Teams from only Mohmand Agency participated in the event.
In the cycle race, Bahar Ali got first position, Kamran second and Wasiullah third spot. In the marathon race, Mohammad Fayaz stood first, Hamid second and Umar third while in the donkey cart race Sazwan clinched first position, Faqir Shah second and Kamran could settle for the third spot.
Mr Fayyaz, 14, later said that his father died seven years ago and he was the only bread earner of the family. He requested the administration to give him employment so he could support his family.
At the end of race a colorful function was held in the stadium which was attended by the political agent, agency sports officer Saeed Akhtar, tribal elders, players and schools students.
Speaking on the occasion, Aslam Wazir said that it was the start of sports activities in the area after a long period of militancy. He said that organising such activities were intended to convey the message that peace had been restored in the entire Mohmand Agency.
He said that cricket, volleyball, football and basketball competitions were being held in the eight tehsils of the agency, which would conclude on March 23.
CURFEW LIFTED: Curfew was lifted in Mohmand tribal region after improvement in the security situation, a security official said here.
The curfew was imposed after militants attacked Latri camp security checkpost at Karapa area of Pandiali tehsil on Feb 18, killing nine Khassadar officials.
The curfew was imposed in Haleemzai, Safi, Biazia, Khwezai, Ekkaghund, Ambar and Pandilai tehsils.
