Mayor, deputies notified

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) notified the victory of Sheikh Anser Aziz, the first mayor of the federal capital on Thursday.

The ECP issued notifications for the three deputy mayors of the Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation, Syed Zeeshan Al Naqvi, Mohammad Azam Khan and Chaudhry Riffat Javed as well.

The mayor and the three deputy mayors all belong to the ruling party and on Monday they defeated PTIs panel led by Raja Khurram Nawaz by 23 votes. Sheikh Aziz’s panel got 49 notes while PTI’s mayoral candidate got 26.

Meanwhile, offices for the mayor and the three deputy mayors have been set up in the G-6 sector at the Capital Development Authority’s (CDA) building, which is known as the Old Navel Complex.

The offices of the 18 union council chairmen who were elected from urban areas will also be set up in the same building. Work on the renovation of the offices is being carried out.

Various CDA directorates such as the District Municipal Administration, parks and environment, water directorate, sports and culture, road and market maintenance and civic management will be handed over to the newly formed Metropolitan Corporation.

A committee formed by the federal government is working on the handing over of these departments.
