BADIN, Nov 8: Army teams have reportedly started the work to assess losses caused by recent rains in the district as due to negligence of Patwaris and other survey team members, incorrect figures about the damages have been reported.

The delay in paying the rain victims compensation for their losses has increased their sufferings and they have been taking to the streets, demanding rehabilitation.

Over 187,000 families were affected when heavy rains hit the district in July.

The families are waiting for compensation so that they can repair or reconstruct their damaged houses but the authorities concerned are keeping them on false hopes.

This correspondent obtained official figure of the losses to houses in the district which revealed that 3,117 Pacca houses and 100,731 Kutcha houses were destroyed while 8,163 Pacca houses and 75,233 Kutcha houses were damaged.

An amount of Rs801.339 million has to be paid to the affected families for their rehabilitation — Rs10,000 for a destroyed Pacca house, Rs5,000 for partially damaged Pacca house, Rs5,000 for a destroyed Kutcha house and Rs3,000 for a partially damaged Kutcha house.

It was reliably learnt that the survey teams have reported wrong figures of the damaged houses.

Members of survey teams, including Nazims and revenue officials, have developed differences over the inclusion of names of the victims and the government has been informed of the fact.

People’s Party Parliamentarians-backed Awam Dost Panel union council Nazims Khalil Bhurgari, Abdul Karim Channa and others have called for payment of compensation to the rain victims before Eidul Fitr.

They said they would launch a protest movement against the government if it did not compensate the people for the losses they suffered in the rains and consequent floods.

Information gathered from the DCO office revealed that Rs105 million has been received by the Badin district administration for rehabilitation of the rain victims.
