IHC appoints first local judge

Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad High Court (IHC) got its first Islamabad-based judge on Wednesday, since its establishment in January 2011.

Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani, a resident of the federal capital, was sworn in as an IHC judge, along with Judge Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb.

IHC Chief Justice Mohammad Anwar Khan Kasi took oath from both the judges.

With the swearing in of both the judges, there are now seven judges at IHC. Local lawyers welcomed the appointment of a local judge.

Senior lawyer, Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, said lawyers had been demanding the appointment of a lawyer from their own bar association for some time.

Advocate Syed Mohammad Tayyab said the issue of appointing an Islamabad-based lawyer has been taken up by the relevant authorities and that lawyers have passed many resolutions in this regard.

He expressed hope that in the future, locals of the federal capital will be appointed to the subordinate judiciary and as ministerial staff.
