Junaid, Azam share honours

KARACHI, Oct 31: Pakistan Customs took control on the opening day of their three-day Patrons Trophy qualifiers against Pakistan Navy at PCB Regional Academy Ground on Friday thanks to fiery bowling by medium pacer Junaid Zia.

Junaid scalped six batsmen for just 19 runs as Navy were bowled out for 86 in 37.4 overs in their first outing. Fellow pacer Imran Ali snapped three wickets for 29 runs.

Customs consolidated their position by reaching 217 for five wickets in their first innings at the close of play.

Opener Rashid Siddique made a polished 76 with eight hits to the boundary and Azhar Shafiq struck a fine 65 laced with seven boundaries. Rashid and Azhar were associated in a 129 runs second wicket stand.

Junaid grabbed three wickets for 11 in nine overs first spell and added three for four runs in the second to destroy Navy’s first innings.

At UBL Sports Complex slow left arm spinner Azam Hussain captured seven wickets for 40 runs in 21 overs to spin out KESC for 156 in 58 overs.

DHA at stumps in reply were 42 for two wickets in 25 overs. Waseem Naeem was 23 not out.

KESC got off to a fine start as opening pair of Javed Mansoor and Kamran Mansoor put on 94 for the first wicket. Javed made 43 with three fours and Kamran hit five boundaries in his 42.

At one stage KESC were 123 for three wicket. But Azam caused the slide with a super bowling performance as KESC lost seven wickets for 29 runs.

At Quaid-i-Azam Park, PIA’s Peshawar pace duo of Umar Gul and Fazle Akber shared nine wickets between them to dismiss Pak PWD for 144 in their first innings on Friday.

Umar Gul ripped through PWD batting with five wickets for 51 runs in 18 overs and Fazle Akber claimed four wickets for 32 runs in 14 overs.

By close of play PIA were 81 for one wicket in 26.1 overs. Test star Yasir Hameed was batting on 25 and Kamran Sajid was 33 not out.
