Seven-goal Saquib goes on rampage

LAHORE, Dec 26: Saquib Mawaz Khan alone scored seven goals, including a hat-trick, to carry Borjan to a narrow win 9-7½ over Black Berets in the Marry Max polo tournament at the Lahore Polo Club ground on Wednesday.

In another match of the day, Remounts Whites defeated Remounts Maroons by 7½-3.

On Tuesday, Muji’s Own beat Guard Rice 7-6.

Black Berets enjoyed two-and-a-half goals’advantage on handicap and but could score five goals during play. For Borjan, Saquib Mawaz Khan was, in brilliant form as he completed his hat-trick in the very first chukker. Amanat scored a field goal for Black Berets. Agha Murtaza also scored his only goal for Borjan.

Thereafter, Saquib struck thrice. Saquib scored his first two goals on field efforts and the his third one on a 30 yards penalty-hit. Borjan led 4-3 at the end of the first chukker.

Both goals of second chukker were scored by Shahzad Aziz for Black Berets on spot penalties near the goalpost which put his team ahead 5½-4.

Saquib Mawaz scored three more goals in third chukker. He put in two back- to-back field goals and also the last goal of this chukker. Ishaq Khakwani put in a field goal for Black  Berets.

Irfan Ali Hyder scored his only goal for Borjan. Thus Borjan  led 8-6 1/2 at end of the third chukker.

Honours were shared in fourth chukker. Ishaq Khakwani scored his second goal for Black Berets on a 40 yards penalty-hit. Saquib Mawaz Khan scored his seventh and Borjan’s ninth goal, again crowning a field effort.

Remounts Whites had half goal’s advantage on handicap and put in seven goals during play. Ahmad Khan, Manzoor Shah, Sufi Muhammad Amir scored two goals, each while Mir Shoaib Ahmad struck once.  For Remounts Maroons, Syed Hasan Raza Gillani, Samiullah and Khurshid scored one goal each.

Lt.-Col. Mujahid Omar scored three goals, Bilal Haye two goals and Kamran Zaidi and Captain Shehryar one goal, each for Muji’s Own. Taimur Malik scored three goals while Malik Atif Yar Tiwana struck twice and Faaiz Rahim Khan once for Guard Rice.
