KARACHI, Oct 29: The inordinate delay in abolishing the weekly water-holiday system even after the restoration of normal supply from Hub source has resulted in acute water shortage in different localities hooked to the Indus source.
Though the supply from Hub source have been restored, senior officials of water and sanitation department are still indecisive to abolish the weekly water-holiday system despite the fact water shortage complaints are kept on increasing since first of Ramazan.
The weekly water-holiday system was introduced in localities in October last when supply from the Hub source was drastically declined. It was assured that as soon as normal supply from the Hub source would be restored the weekly water-holiday system would be abolished.
Residents of various localities complained that whenever a weekly water-holiday was enforced in their areas, they often remained without water for three consecutive days.
Admitting that most of the localities where water-holiday is enforced usually go dry for two to three days, W&S officials attributed the situation to faulty water distribution system, tempering of valve operation, illegal water connections and wastage of 35 per cent water through leaked pipelines.
“In fact, the entire attention of the W&S department’s senior officials is nowadays focused on increasing water supply to Orangi, Baldia and Surjani, at the expense of localities hooked to Indus source,” they remarked.
They said that there was no justification to retain the water-holiday system because the city had already started getting 100 million gallons of water daily from the Hub source.
