PSG crowned autumn champions after win on emotional day
PARIS: Paris St Germain are guaranteed to end 2015 on top of the Ligue 1 table after a 4-1 win against Troyes on a day marked by tributes to the victims of the recent terror attacks in Paris that killed 130 and injured at least 350.
It was a routine win for PSG with Edinson Cavani and Layvin Kurzawa finding the net either side of a Zlatan Ibrahimovic penalty before youngster Jean-Kevin Augustin wrapped up the points as Laurent Blanc’s side made it nine consecutive league wins to extend their lead to 15 points.
“To be autumn champions is a good thing,” coach Blanc told reporters, “in so much as it confirms that we’re taking an enormous amount of points. It’s no guarantee of ending the season as champions. What interests us is to be champions [at the end].”
Cavani struck in the 20th minute with his eighth league goal of the season, confidently volleying home from Angel di Maria’s pass.
Ibrahimovic struck his 10th in 10 league games from the penalty spot to begin the second half, and Kurzawa hit a crisp half-volley from the edge of the penalty to make it 3-0 soon after.
Augustin, who had replaced Cavani, got the fourth goal with six minutes left, his shot from 25 yards going through goalkeeper Paul Bernardoni’s legs.
Troyes responded when Thomas Ayasse curled an effort over Kevin Trapp in stoppage time.
Angers are up to second place on 26 points after a 2-0 victory over Lille thanks to two goals in five first-half minutes through Gilles Sunu and Ismael Traore.
