LAHORE, Oct 28: Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool has ordered formation of separate conservation boards for each monument in the province.
Visiting the Shalamar Gardens, Gulabi Bagh and Dai Anga’s tomb on Tuesday, the governor directed the archaeology department officials to prepare a feasibility so that each monument could properly be taken care of.
He also directed them to open the monuments, especially the Lahore Fort, the Shalamar Gardens and the Jahangir’s Tomb, in the evening to attract more visitors.
He asked the archaeology department officials to initiate educational and cultural activities in the monuments, besides showing historical plays and arranging classical music for visitors’ knowledge and entertainment.
The governor also directed them to expedite renovation of the Shalamar Gardens with the provision of Rs70.3 million grant. He suggested that Irani and Sindhi restorers and architectures should be called for the restoration of the Shalamar Gardens unique hydraulic system —- a part of the Inayat and Angoori baghs built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1642.
The City District Government authorities were directed to remove encroachments near the Shalamar Gardens.
Federal Archaeology Department Director Saleemul Haq told the governor that Rs5.2 million would be spent on the repair of Gulabi Bagh and Dai Anga.
