KARACHI, Oct 26: A non-governmental organization working for women’s rights has urged the authorities to save the lives of a couple who are in danger of being killed.

The couple married of their free will and had been on the run since. They have been caught by some influential people and brought to Sukkur.

In a statement issued here on Sunday the NGO — Women Action Forum — has urged the Sindh High Court to take suo moto notice to save the life of the couple and their marriage.

The WAF said that though the court had accepted the couple’s marriage as valid, the influential elements did not accept it and were trying to get it dissolved.

The NGO said that the couple — Shaista Almani and Balakhsher Mehar — married at Pano Aqil on June 1, 2003, but owing to severe opposition by some of their relatives, they came to Karachi.

The couple approached the Preedy Police Station in the city for protection and appeared before the Court of Judicial Magistrate South at Karachi. The court first ordered for their protection and then allowed them to live wherever they wanted to.

The WAF said that the couple had been brought to Sukkur on the night of Oct 24 and now those people were trying to dissolve the marriage by force. The NGO apprehends danger to the lives of the couple.

The NGO has also condemned the illegal and inhuman actions of the influential people of Pano Aqil who have ignored the orders of the court in which the marriage was proved valid and the couple were allowed to live according to their wish.
