GUJRANWALA, Oct 23: The Transport Society Gujranwala (TSG) and public transport vehicle owners on Thursday protested impounding of their vehicles by the Regional Transport Authority on the charge of not paying it a monthly amount regularly.

Several vehicle crew said most of 300 to 350 wagons being run on the GT Road from Wazirabad to Gujranwala, Eminabad and Kamoki were registered under the TSG. The RTA secretary, they said, had been receiving Rs1,500 a month from each wagon for the last five years. The amount had recently been reduced to Rs1,000, he added.

They complained that their vehicles were being impounded or challaned, though they had been paying the monthly sum regularly. They demanded that the sum should be either returned to them or used for the construction of wagon stops along the GT Road from Wazirabad to Kamoki.

When this correspondent tried to contact the RTA secretary, he was not available for comments at his office.

PROTEST CAMP: The PPP set up a camp at the district courts to protest against unemployment, lawlessness and increasing prices, here on Thursday.

PPP divisional president Chaudhry Imtiaz Safdar Warraich and others criticized the government for the situation.

They also demanded that Asif Zardari should be set free without further delay.

HEARING: The Lahore High Court on Thursday transferred the hearing in the murder case of former provincial minister Chaudhry Farooq Ahmad to the Anti-Terrorism Court No 1. Earlier, the ATC No 2 had been hearing the case.

The accused had reportedly requested change of court. The ATC No 1 judge, Syed Iftikhar Husain Shah, fixed Oct 25 (Saturday) for the hearing of the case.
