LAHORE, Oct 23: The Mutahida Mehaz-i-Asatza on Thursday organized a protest demonstration against Punjab government’s ‘anti-teacher policies’, at Nasser Bagh.
A large number of protesters, carrying banners and placards, demanded that the government should change its policies regarding appointment of teachers on contract, NGOs’ interference in schools and denationalization. They also demanded at least a 15 per cent raise.
Though the Mehaz led by Raja Zafeer Ahmad Satti had planned to hold a protest march on The Mall, a heavy contingent of police besieged the Nasser Bagh and did not allow the teachers to come out on the road.
Later, the Mehaz leaders were invited by Punjab education minister Mian Imran Masood to his chamber in the Punjab Assembly.
The minister assured the delegation that their demands would be considered sympathetically and constituted a committee headed by special secretary schools.
Following the decision that the committee meeting would be convened on Oct 28, the Mehaz called of its protest campaign.
