ISLAMABAD, Oct 18: Top seed Mariam Rahim annexed the women’s singles title on Saturday defeating Shiza Ihtisham in the final of the 20th Federal Cup Tennis Tournament at the Islamabad Club.

Mariam who was in fine form scored a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Playing mainly from the baseline, she raced to a lead by breaking the second and fourth games of her opponent and deservedly went on to win the first set.

Shiza, appearing in her first final, seemed to be under pressure as Mariam pinned her down to take the set and the match without conceding a single game.

The top seeded pair of Aqeel Khan and Rashid Malik captured the men’s doubles title beating Hameedul Haq and Asim Shafik 7- 6(6), 6-1.

Aqeel and Rashid built up a 2-0 lead as they broke the first game of Hameed. Asim and Hameed then levelled the score at 5-all by breaking Aqeel’s 10th game and the set was decided on a tie- break.

In the second set it was however easy going for Aqeel and Rashid as they wrapped it up to claim the crown.

Yasir Khan, younger brother of Aqeel Khan, took the boys under-14 title knocking out M. Usman Ijaz in a well-contested three-set match.

Anoosha Aslam, a student of Islamabad Tennis Academy (ITA) stunned top seed Sara Mahboob in a major upset of the day to bag the girls under-14 title.
