Scrutiny of over 15,000 LG candidates in eight Sindh districts begins

KARACHI: The scrutiny process for over 15,000 candidates who had filed their nomination papers for contesting the first phase of the Oct 31 local government elections in eight districts of Sindh began on Sunday.

In the first phase, LG elections would be held in Sukkur, Khairpur, Ghotki, Larkana, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Kashmore, and Kambar-Shahdadkot on Oct 31.

The process of filing nomination papers was completed on Saturday and according to officials total 15,373 candidates filed their papers against total 3,861 general seats of councillors in the eight districts.

The scrutiny would be completed by Sept 18 while appeals against acceptance or rejection of nomination forms could be filed by Sept 24 and the same would be decided by Sept 30.

Candidates may withdraw their nominations by Oct 1 and the final list of candidates would be published on Oct 2.

In the eight districts, there are 1,790 candidates in the run against 426 seats of district council; 6,367 against 1,704 seats of union councils; 622 candidates vying for 184 seats of Sukkur union committees.

There are 2,173 candidates are in the run for 281 seats of municipal committees, while the candidates for 385 town committees are 2,506.

For the 426 seats of chairman and as many seats of vice chairman in the eight districts, 3,830 candidates — 1,915 for chairman seats and equal number of candidates for vice chairman seats — submitted their nomination papers.

Sukkur

A total of 203 candidates are in the run for 37 seats of district council (DC); 809 for 148 union councils (UCs); 141 are contesting on 10 seats of municipal committee (MC); 283 on 30 seats of town committee (TC); 340 candidates each are vying for 166 seats of chairman and vice chairman, respectively.

Khairpur

For 86 DC seats, there are 424 candidates; 1,559 filed nominations for 344 UC seats; for 49 MC seats 507 candidates; 384 filed candidatures for 156 TC seats; 384 candidates each are in the run for 172 seats of chairman and vice chairman, respectively.

Ghotki

There are 243 candidates against 64 seats of DC; for 256 seats of UC there are 741 candidates; for 27 MC seats there are 168 candidates, for 36 TC seats there are 249 candidates, for 128 seats of chairman and vice chairman, there are 230 candidates each.

Larkana

For 47 seats of DC there are 214 candidates; 1,209 are in the run against 188 seats of UC; for 17 MC seats there are 162 candidates; for 29 TC seats there are 164 candidates; there are 372 candidates each for the 94 seats of chairman and vice chairman, respectively.

Shikarpur

Total 143 candidates have filed nomination papers against 55 Dc seats; for 220 seats of UC there are 387 candidates; for 30 MC seats there are 346 candidates; 175 candidates are in the run against 32 TC seats; for 110 seats of chairman and vice chairman, respectively, 126 candidates each filed their nomination papers.

Jacobabad

There are 182 candidates for 44 seats of DC; 500 candidates for 176 UC seats; for 41 seats of MC there are 373 candidates; 42 for 16 seats of TC; for 88 seats of chairman and vice chairman, there are total 246 candidates are in the run.

Kashmore

For 41 DC seats, there are 175 candidates are in the run; 396 candidates for 164 UC seats; for 16 MC seats there 196 candidates, for 40 TC seats 158 candidates are in the run; there are 123 candidates each for 82 seats of chairman and vice chairman.

Kambar-Shahdadkot

There are 206 candidates are in the run against 52 DC seats; for 208 UC seats there are 766 candidates; for 28 MC seats there are 280 candidates; there are 380 candidates for 46 TC seats; total 328 candidates — 164 each — filed their nomination papers for 104 seats of chairman and vice chairman, respectively.
