NBP capture trophy

KARACHI, Oct 15: National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) lifted the Junior cup hockey trophy when they beat Pakistan Telecommunication Corporation Ltd (PTCL) in sudden-death in the final at Faisalabad Hockey Stadium on Wednesday, according to information made available here.

The match ended in 2-2 stalemate in regulation time and four-all on penalty stroke shoot-out. NBP skipper Imran Warsi emerged as hero when he scored off a decisive penalty stroke.

The banker’s in fact came from behind to clinch the title after a hard-fought final.

Centre-forward Haseem Khan gave NBP an encouraging start by slamming the opening goal in the fifth minute. PTCL skipper Muhammad Nadeem drew level seconds before the half-time whistle.

Five minutes into the second session, Pakistan’s junior International Muhammad Arif gave PTCL 2-1 lead.

However, five minutes from close, full back Imran Warsi converted a penalty stroke to make it 2-2.

In a shoot-out session both team could convert four of their five penalty strokes.

But in the sudden-death shoot-out Imran Warsi converted the stroke to help bankers claim the title.

Punjab Assembly Speaker Muhammad Afzal Sahi presented the glittering trophy to Imran Warsi with a cash prize of Rs 20,000. PTCL captain Nadeem collected runners-up trophy and Rs 15,000.

Pakistan Railways clinched third spot when they beat Pakistan Police on the spin of the coin. Railways got Rs 10,000.—APP
