LAHORE, Dec 24: Governor Khalid Maqbool hosted a reception in the honour of the Christian community on the eve of Christmas at the Governor’s House here on Monday.

Speaking to the participants, the governor reiterated government’s commitment to strive for the betterment and welfare of the Christian community. He said the government was determined to protect the life, honour and properties of minorities.

Citing example of the western countries where minorities had to suffer at the hands of local people after the Sept 11 incident, he said contrary to that the minority community was never subjected to revengeful action in Pakistan.

He regretted that despite its efforts, the administration had yet not succeeded in tracking down the culprits involved in the Bahawalapur incident. He said the government would not rest on its oars until the accused were arrested.

Punjab Minister for Minorities Dr Khalid Ranjha said the five per cent quota for minorities in police service would be fully implemented to give a sense of participation to the minorities in provincial affairs.

He said the joint electorates was the longstanding demand of the minorities which could not be solved without proper legislation.

A large number of people, including Bishop Alexander John Malik, Arch Bishop of Lahore Lawrence Sardonal and ulema of various schools of thought were also present.

Later the governor cut a Christmas cake along with representatives of the Christian community.—APP
