ECP and Sindh, Punjab to defend phased LG polls plan in court

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the governments of Punjab and Sindh have decided to defend the proposal to hold local government (LG) elections in the two provinces in three phases in the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the commission held here on Monday. The meeting was attended by Chief Election Commissioner retired Justice Sardar Mohammad Raza Khan, members of the ECP, the election commissioners of the two provinces as well as the chief secretary of Sindh and the LG secretary of Punjab.

The two provincial officials briefed the commission on preoccupation of the provincial and district administration in rehabilitation of flood-affected people and the law and order situation, particularly in Ashura days.

The commission was informed that more than 100 appeals had been filed in high courts of Punjab and Sindh on delimitations of constituencies, which needed to be disposed off before issuance of the LG election schedule.
