Four executed in Punjab jails

MIANWALI/GUJRANWALA: Four death row prisoners -- three in Mianwali and one in Gujranwala -- were executed on Wednesday.

Three death row prisoners, convicted of triple murder, were executed at the Central Jail of Mianwali.

Jail Superintendent Sajid Baig told Dawn Amanullah Khan, Muhammad Riaz Khan and Muhammad Mumtaz Khan, all of Village Chidroo, had shot dead their three rivals in 2006.

Another condemned prisoner, Waqar, convicted of killing of five people, was executed in the Gujranwala jail.

Waqar had shot dead Raham Bibi, Nazia Bibi, Anjum Bibi, Shazia Bibi and Muhammad Ishaq over an enmity in village Mianwali Bangala on Pasrur Road in June 2000.

The jail authorities handed over his body to heirs.

His heirs demonstrated outside the jail premises on Tuesday to saying that he was not medically fit for hanging. On Wednesday, the doctors checked him and declared him fit for gallows.

The execution of Karim Nawaz Khan, of Mooch, convicted of triple murder was postponed at the last moment when the Supreme Court issued a stay order. He shot dead his sister, brother and his wife in 2006.

Another condemned prisoner, Muhammad Anwar, of Hafizabad, dodged hanging at the last moment. He was convicted of killing his wife and daughter over a domestic issue.It is said that heirs to the deceased women pardoned him.
